Are you interested in attending a college or university in the United States? If English is not your native language, going to college in the US can seem challenging. Even students with a good knowledge of English can be apprehensive of attending college classes in English. However, CCLS-NJ has a solution: our College Pathway Program (CPP).
About the Program
CCLS-NJ’s College Pathway Program (CPP) equips you with the necessary skills to succeed in higher education in the US. Whether you are pursuing an associate’s degree (two years), a bachelor’s degree (four years), or a graduate degree (e.g., Master’s or PHD), this program prepares non-native English speakers for success.
The program consists of three courses: Oral Communication, Writing, and Reading. Each course is 18 hours per week for 12 weeks each (36 weeks total). Each course introduces the students to college level English with actual content from university classes in popular subjects, including Sociology, Economics, Biology, Humanities, and Environmental Engineering.
What you will learn
Each course in the program includes college-level lectures and lessons created by Stanford University professors and taught by experienced CCLS instructors who have achieved a minimum of a master’s degree. Course materials include textbooks, on-line lectures, and electronic content.
Students will develop not only an understanding of English in a college setting, but skills that are valuable in higher education, which include Critical Thinking, Note-Taking, Teamwork, and Applied Learning.
You will also:
- Analyze scholarly journal articles.
- Synthesize ideas through various mediums.
- Interact with technologies to supplement your learning.
- Participate in panel discussions and debates.
- Learn about what is expected of college students.
- Become integrated with American culture.
- Write college level research papers (which can be submitted as writing samples to your college of choice).
- Analyze charts and graphs.
- Develop a professional resume.
- Boost your comprehension by completing various learning activities and lab assignments.
- Much more!
As previously mentioned, each of the three courses in the CPP program are 12 weeks long, with 18 hours of classroom instruction per week (36 weeks total). The courses can be taken in-person, hybrid, or 100% on-line. (F-1 Visa students must attend classes in-person). While you are encouraged to complete all three classes in sequence, you are welcome to take a single course to sharpen a particular skill. At the successful completion of the program, you will receive a “Certificate of Competition” that you can submit as part of the admissions package to your college of choice.

Intensive English Program (IEP) in the New York Metropolitan Area
Our intensive English program consists of 11 English courses, from beginning to advanced levels. Our program aims to replicate immersive conditions through real-life task-based learning (e.g., presentations, roleplays, debates, etc.), increased peer interaction, instructor-facilitated communicative tasks tied to cultural and academic life in the U.S. This program is ideal for international students (F-1 visa) and for local students who want additional practice.
The Intensive program features:
- 2.5 hours of CEFR-aligned instruction (English program curriculum);
- 2 hours of communicative, listening, or writing-focused practice (application and perfection of skills learnt in the main course). These hours are intentionally designed to help students apply their language knowledge in practical, real-life contexts.
The student's material consists of a textbook and a workbook with optional access to a computer-assisted language learning software. The workbook features many TOEFL* style exercises and helps students familiarize themselves with the types of tasks and challenges presented by the TOEFL* exam.
All our English teachers are qualified and experienced professionals, carefully trained in our methodology.
Using multimedia technology, CCLS has designed a unique program that effectively teaches adults and young adults to communicate in the target language from day one. You will learn the language as spoken by native speakers in everyday situations and you will be encouraged to think and speak only in English. This contact with linguistic and cultural aspects of the English language helps further develop your communication skills, so you can understand and use the language naturally. Both formal and everyday American speech are introduced in each lesson to serve as the basis for all subsequent classroom work.
Course duration: 12 weeks per course level. 18 hours of class time per week.
Total program duration: Students are allotted a maximum of four (4) calendar years to complete a full course of studies. While our program takes 2 years and 6 months to complete, CCLS-NJ's policy accounts for factors such as the repeating of classes, student vacation, and temporary breaks, that may prolong program completion.
Group size: 8 students per class on average (maximum of 15)
Schedule: Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. F-1 students are required to study a minimum of 18 hours per week. They are required to attend classes in person and maintain full-time enrollment.
Placement tests: non-beginner level students joining the intensive English program are required to take written and oral placement tests once the student visa (F-1) is approved.
CCLS, a language school in the New York Metropolitan area since 2003, is accredited by The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).
This school is authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students.
